The wine area of Colli Bolognesi

Updated: Oct 26, 2021

After a long day wandering around the beauties of Bologna you have chosen to delight your palate with mortadella, tortellini, tagliatelle and cotoletta alla bolognese?

Wow, you are almost there, you are just a step away from heaven!

Then go straight and ask for wines from the Colli Bolognesi area, a hidden gem in the Italian landscape.

An area of extraordinary landscape, historical and cultural wealth, known throughout the world also for the quality of the food and wine offer.

Located on the hills south and west of Bologna, with different altitudes, which reach 450 meters above sea level (Monte S. Pietro), extremely varied soils and microclimates, it is a land suited to the production of quality wines, from the great red wines that have brought this territory to the world, to the white Pignoletto, which stands at the top of the qualitative wine pyramid through the DOCG Colli Bolognesi Classico Pignoletto.

The DOC wines are many, but the most historical one is undoubtedly Pignoletto, from the Grechetto Gentile grape native variety, that gives life to a range of unmistakable white wines. The history of this grape dates back to Pliny the Elder, who mentions it in the 1st century BC. as a wine "Pino Lieto, not sweet enough to be good."

The range of Colli Bolognesi DOC wines includes among the whites Colli Bolognesi DOC Sauvignon Blanc, Colli Bolognesi DOC Pinot Bianco, Colli Bolognesi DOC Riesling Italico and Colli Bolognesi DOC Chardonnay, while the reds include Colli Bolognesi DOC Barbera, Colli Bolognesi DOC Merlot and Colli Bolognesi DOC Cabernet Sauvignon.

Many of these grapes are allochthonous, but have found their ideal environment in this area.

The Red Wines, with international grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot or the more typical Barbera, made the Colli Bolognesi area famous in Italy and around the world in the 1980s.

Even today, Barbera is rightly considered in the area as the historic red wine of the Bolognese Hills, where it is still possible to find an excellent production, sought after by international markets.

Join the downtown wine esperience to discover all the Colli Bolognesi range.
