Meet the producer: Il Pliò

I must admit that the first time Carlo and I met it was outside the world of wine, by chance in a old brewery in Bologna that we both love. There were few customers, we were both with our little daughters, so we started chatting, like good dads do when they meet over a mug of beer.

And from beer it was a moment to get to talking about wine and discover that Carlo is a small producer from the Bolognese Hillside that I didn't yet know.

It was therefore automatic for me to invite myself to visit his vineyard and taste his wines.

So, it was wonderful to find ourselves on a warm morning at the end of June walking among his vineyards with Carlo talking about the geology of the Pliocenic Contrafforte, which gave its name to his company, and then sipping his wines in the shed among the vineyards, with Giorgia, a girl from Sardinia who studies agronomics in Bologna and helps Carlo, and Gracy, a student from New Dehli who lives in Bologna preparing a thesis in Wine Marketing and collaborating with me.

Oenologist originally from Milan, Carlo has lived in Bologna for years now, where he collaborates with local wineries and where he has finally managed to produce his own wines, from the vineyard to the bottle, while his wife manages the excellent Bibe wine bar https://www.enotecabibebologna.it/ in the city.

Il Pliò overall production is around 4,000 bottles/year. In the shed we could taste a couple of bottles from his wine range, which surprised and thrilled.

  • Titanis 2022: 80% Trebbiano, 20% Pignoletto. Traditional method sparkling wine without disgorgement, produced without the addition of sulphites. A year of rest on its lees after two months of second fermentation, a very pleasant burst of warm and refreshing citrus fruits. Perfect for a summer brunch with smiling friends. Tiny elegant everlasting bubbles.

  • Lituus 2022: 100% Pignoletto. Two days of skin contact maceration for this pignoletto with body and elegance, very dry, which releases extremely sweet notes of ripe fruit, saffron and turmeric, alongside yogurt and yellow tomato. A great gastronomic wine, perfect for a worthy accompaniment to tortellini or tortelloni with mushrooms.
