Meet the producer: Cà Bosca

The choice of quitting my old job and starting working in the wine business is giving me the chance to meet so many interesting and unique persons, and Mats is certainly amongst them.

Former manager of a well-known Swedish multinational with an important headquarter in Modena, he and his partner took over this estate nestled in the hills of Monte San Pietro, close to Bologna, in 2018.

Back then everything was already talking about grapes and wine, but no vineyards yet existed. And it is Mats himself who decides to create his home vineyard, 0.5 hectares of rows of Pignoletto, Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The first official harvest is that of 2022, with a very small production of high quality right from the start.

For now, Mats does not make wine yet but only grows the grapes. For the winemaking he relies on the expert hands of Federico Ecchia of Anonima Agricola Viticoltori Valsamoggia (see the article https://www.bologna-wine.com/post/meet-the-producer-anonima-agricola-viticoltori-valsamoggia).

Mats' estate is open to visits and specializes in hosting events, dinners and tastings. Furthermore, the park is conceived as a zen path of great charm, a unique experience worth trying.

After visiting his villa, where everything recalls grape growing, he let us taste all of his wine range:

  • Bianco del Gelso 2023: 100% Pignoletto. Total production: 600 bottles. Named after the mulberry tree (gelso in Italian) close to the pignoletto row. A Pignoletto with a Burgundian elegance, vinified in steel vats only, spontaneously fermented by ambient yeasts. MLC carried out, unfiltered. Salty and mineral, with a beautiful structure and easy to drink.

  • Rosso del Fico 2023: 100% Sangiovese. Total production: 400 bottles. Named after the fig tree (fico in Italian) close to the sangiovese row. It's very rare to find a wine made from Sangiovese grapes in this part of Italy, a slightly harsher climate than Romagna or Tuscany, which makes it express itself in a decidedly unusual way.

A slightly dark nose that struggles to express itself in the typical fruity tones of a young Sangiovese, fresh and lively in the mouth.

Vinification in steel vats, a red also suitable for fish, perfect for summer barbecues, directly from the ice bucket.

  • Rosso Bologna 2023: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Sangiovese. Total production: 800 bottles. Peppery nose that immediately reveals the presence of Cabernet Sauvignon, then black fruits. Gastronomic and easy-drinking wine. Perfect with a plate of lasagna Bolognese and a juicy grilled meat.

The location is open to visitors and available for events. For more info:
